| Increasing your traffic by giving your website visitors more content |
|
There are three ways to get users to come to your site and keep them coming back: content, content, and content. Gizmos like sweepstakes and a nice design may get people to look at your site, but without content they'll never return. SEO optimization may get you free traffic but they won't stay without quality content.
Make content a number one priority. Get as much as you can, but make sure it's quality content. Quality content keeps visitors coming back and keeps them on your site longer. With quality content visitors will bookmark your site and recommend it.
OK, I'm sure you're convinced- but how do you know what is quality content?
You must answer the following questions to know what types of content to pursue: 1. What types of content do my readers like best? On one of my sites JewCentral.com I provide content for Jewish professionals. This is a relatively serious target market so I never really pursued humorous content. After looking at the results of my analysis- i saw that humor articles were averaged the most reads per article! Now I give readers a break, and include some humorous articles between the more serious ones.
2. Which authors do my readers like best? You may have many authors contributing content- but who do your readers like best? The answer will let you know which author you should encourage to submit more content.
3. What types of content am I under serving? You may be neglecting a core category for your site. Make sure you are touching the main topics of your site. People may want variety.
4. How is my recent content doing? As your site matures you will experiment with keyword placement and content topics. It is important to monitor recent content to see which experiments are working and which aren't.
When I set out to find the answer to this I looked through all my logs and stats and struggled to find the answers. Thus I created MetAuthors, a module for the PHPNuke content management system. It answers all these questions and more with the click of one button. You can see a demo and download it at MetOpen.com.
If you give your readers what they want then they'll keep coming back.
