Google has "suggested" that sites use it's Sitemap Protocol which allows you to inform search engines about URLs on your websites that are available for crawling. And when the largest search engine talks we listen because we want as many free visitors as we can get (although they dont guarantee any).

There are many free tools out there to track your page stats, some are better (ms analysis) than others. I've never found any to be perfect.
Google Analytics (which it bought from Urchin Software) is now free- it used to cost $200/month ($695/month before that). If it's anything like google's other products it should be pretty good.
